5 daily habits to a healthier you

Lemon Water

Give it a twist

Squeeze the juice of one large lemon in to a glass of water (warm if preferred) every morning before breakfast. Lemon juice is a natural cleanser that helps remove harmful organisms and toxins that cause illness and disease.

Furthermore it helps to detoxify your liver by stimulating enzyme function. This in turn frees up your liver to concentrate on other things like burning body fat. As toxins’ build up in your body the liver struggles to function as it should and starts to concentrate on the more important jobs.

Drinking lemon water is very effective at attacking viral infections, and there subsequent sore throats. Plus it also boosts your immune system, so you’ll simultaneously fight off the infection completely. As well being anti viral and immune boosting, lemons also:

  • Assist in fighting hunger cravings
  • Reduce anxiety and depression
  • Freshen breath
  • Help with weight loss
  • Aid digestion
  • Help with caffeine & nicotine cravings

Mineral or Alkaline water

Switching to mineral or alkaline water has so many health benefits. Tap water contains fluoride which is good for your teeth but is still a toxin to the body, no matter how small the quantity. The amount may still be small enough for your liver to remove it from the body, and lemon juice will help to clear these toxins, but it still contributes to the hundreds of toxins we accumulate throughout the day.

Tap water also contains chlorine, again in small quantities, so we are led to believe that these small amounts are un-harmful. But the body still has to remove these toxins. All of these poisons build up in the body and put strain on the mechanisms that deal with there removal. This is why, as we age, our defences weaken and we become sick.

Other side effects from drinking chlorinated water include damage to your arteries. Chlorine causes scaring of the arteries which is where plaque can build up in the body causing arterial thinning, which leads to heart attack and stroke.

The Inuit people live (in the Canadian Arctic) on a very fatty diet of seals, mackerel, salmon and so on, and their cholesterol is levels are very high, and yet they suffer nearly no effects of heart disease.

Why is this?

Or though they have high cholesterol they have no scaring of the arteries due to only drinking fresh stream water which does not cause scaring, so the plaque cannot build up.

As mentioned above, maintaining a balanced PH is very important for your body’s health, by eating the correct diet, and drinking alkaline water, you will create a more alkaline environment within your body to protect yourself from illness and disease forever.

Vitamin Supplementation

A lot of people find it hard, or even just don’t want to eat a healthy diet. It’s always worth trying to make the effort but until you are ready, it’s worth supplementing your diet. Even if you do consider yourself to be a healthy eater – supplementing vitamins is still very beneficial.

In today’s ‘processed world’ a lot of what you eat these days just isn’t up to scratch. In fact a familiar term in the world of nutrition these days is “If man made it, don’t eat it”. Unfortunately that is easier said than done.

It may be that you can’t afford to eat healthy, or you’re not a very good cook. Whatever your reason for turning to the can opener, your just not getting enough nutrients -remember as we age our nutritional requirements increase.

Processed food contains a lot of additives, or ‘micro toxins’ that our liver has to deal with. Even fruits contain pesticides and other treatments as well animal products containing toxins and antibiotics – the list goes on.

Even if you have freshly steamed vegetables on your plate every day, modern day farming techniques mean that your food has nowhere near the same nutritional value it had 50 years ago. So taking a good all round ‘mega vitamin’ will ensure that your body will receive every single vitamin & mineral it needs to function correctly, and optimally.

Optimally meaning as well as it possibly can. For example, the livers number 1 job is toxin removal. Fat burning is further down on the list of importance. The body will always send the available nutrients to the areas where they are most needed.

For instance let’s say your body is lacking in essential oils. The few available oils that are available will go to areas like the organs and arteries first, leaving non essential areas such as your hair to become unhealthy, dry and easy to break.

Cosmetics aren’t a scam but they are completely unnecessary. Nourishing shampoos, or creams that give you healthier hair or skin are a waste of money. Most of these just add to your daily list of toxins that get absorbed into your body through your skin and eventually to your liver.

By just making sure you get enough vital vitamins, minerals and essential oils, you wouldn’t need to spend small fortunes on these products, and your skin would remain looking youthful for much longer, not because it looks younger, but because it really is! The money you save every year on not buying cosmetics would mean you can afford healthy treats like Salmon more often, or some good quality vitamin supplements.

Vitamin C is another important vitamin that has so many important functions in the body including:

  • Strengthens your immune system
  • Keeps your bones, skin and joints firm
  • Anti-oxidants that protect against cancer and heart disease
  • Anti –stress properties
  • Helps turn food into energy
  • And so much more

Eating an orange simply isn’t good enough. Again the body must prioritise which areas of the body it must attend to first. RDA’s (recommended daily amounts) are guidelines set out by the government in the 60’s to eradicate deficiency diseases such as rickets and scurvy, but that doesn’t mean to say that you are still not deficient!

So by making sure your body receives enough vitamins, minerals and essential oils, you will be ensuring your body – like a well oiled machine – is functioning at 100% all of the time, and like a machine that isn’t running efficiently, sooner or later something is going to give way. 

Low Carb

Adopt a low carb diet

Forget the Atkins diet! This diet basically tells you to cut out all carbohydrates which are incredibly bad for the body – again decreasing its ability to function at 100%.

Reducing the amount of carbohydrates on your plate will significantly reduce the amount of sugar that your body has to deal with. Carbohydrate is broken down in the body through a number of processes until it is converted in sugar (glucose), the bodies’ only source of fuel – so no matter what you eat, your body has to eventually convert it into glucose first.

Some of these carbs convert fast, whilst others slow – the slower the better. To give you an idea you should only ever eat:

  • one thin slice of wholemeal bread
  • 3 or 4 small new potatoes
  • a couple of spoonfuls of rice

These amounts are per meal with the rest of your plate being made up of mostly vegetables and a portion of protein. Avoid red meats if you can. Grilled chicken breast is fine, but adopting a mostly fish diet helps to avoid excess toxins found in meat.

This seems very little but it should give you an idea of how much we ‘over fuel’ ourselves and why obesity is becoming epidemic. In a short time your body will get used to the reduced carbs and within a week will begin to function much more efficiently as well as your body beginning to return to its ideal weight.


Just go nuts

Although walnuts are considered to be one of the best nuts to eat for health, they are however an acid forming food, which affects the bodies PH, and can create a more acidic environment within the body that allows illness and disease to thrive. Almonds are Alkaline forming and therefore promote health and well-being, and are a much better choice. Eating 5-6 almonds, or a tablespoon of pumpkin seeds with a piece of fruit twice a day is a fantastic little snack to tide you over until meal times.

Pumpkins seeds are a super-food and contain a whole host of vitamins, minerals and essential oils that can:

  • help lower bad cholesterol and increase good cholesterol in the blood.
  • provide good-quality protein.
  • release anti-stress neuro-chemicals in the brain, helping with anxiety and nervous irritability.
  • Provide powerful anti-oxidants that help protect against illnesses such as cancer.
  • Aid metabolism within body.
  • help the body develop resistance to infections.

If a doctor told you that you could take a pill that cuts the risk of prostate and ovarian cancers, and may have a role in prevention of diabetic nephropathy (kidney disease), as well as all of the above. A pill that is completely harmless and will only cost you around £2 a week – you would be asking him to prescribe them to you – well prescribe them to yourself! Pumpkin seeds do all of this and more!
